- W79454170 abstract "It has long been recognized that opiates may exert potent actions on the cardiovascular system (HOLADAY 1983). Identification of endogenous opioid peptides and opioid receptors within the central nervous system, particularly at sites associated with central cardiovascular regulation, has led to an examination of their potential role in cardiovascular control both under normal physiological conditions and in pathophysiological states. Support for the concept that endogenous opioid systems are involved in cardiovascular regulation and dysregulation is derived from three types of experimental approaches: (1) examination of the effects of centrally or systemically administered opioids; (2) evaluation of the actions of opioid or opioid receptor antagonists, or modification of opioid receptors; and (3) measurement of altered levels of endogenous opioids or their receptors in pathophysiological as compared with normal conditions. Interpretation of the results of such studies, however, is complicated by the fact that the cardiovascular effects of opioids or opioid receptor antagonists are critically dependent upon the experimental conditions and models. This has led to considerable confusion and apparent conflicts in the literature." @default.
