• W794769341 abstract "Similarly to what is seen in humans, an increase incidence of neoplasms in pets is being noticed and in dogs, the skin is the most common site for its occurrence. Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors (PNST) are cutaneous tumors with mesenchymal origin that occur in dogs and can exhibit benign and malignant biological behaviour. Even after many years of research, the histogenesis of PNST in dogs is still not fully elucidated and the difficulty in characterizing and classifying this type of neoplasms still persists. In order to contribute to a better and more correct characterization of these lesions, 40 canine PNST (17 benign and 23 malignant cases) were subjected to an immunohistochemical panel with the following markers: S-100, Ki-67, Vimentin, GFAP, Desmin, a-actin and NSE. In addition, we also studied some characteristics of the animals included in the sample (breed, age, sex), certain clinical parameters (size, number and location of lesions) and some data related to its follow-up. Our research discusses the extreme difficulty in classifying canine PNST, based merely in the study of its histogenesis or immunohistochemical analysis, however it highlights other important conclusions that may be usefull for diagnostic and prognostic purposes in veterinary medicine: malignant PNST present dimensions significantly higher than the benign ones; in general, malignant PNST exhibit an overexpression of S-100 compared to benign lesions, as well as cellular proliferation indexes are significantly higher." @default.
