- W794896893 abstract "Puff, Helmut Sodomy in Reformation Germany and Switzerland, 1400-1600. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2003.320 pp. $24.00 paperback. In this stimulating book, Helmut Puff lays bare the cultural rhetorics of the mute sin of sodomy in pre- and post-Reformation Central Europe, tracing its intersections with contemporary discourses on sexuality, social mores, and above all national and religious identity. The particular strength of Puff's study is its demonstration that homoeroticism, a topic of particular taboo in late medieval and early modern Christian society, remained legible under erasure in a variety of legal, literary, and religious documents. In its unspoken existence, sodomy assumed a powerful imagined presence, often situated in Rome, against which central cultural phenomena such as Protestant matrimony and German humanism were articulated. Moreover, Puff's close analysis of German and Swiss sources reveals that same-sex sexual relations were by no means uniform throughout Europe at this time. In Central Europe of the 15th and 16tl1 centuries, homosexuality-to the extent that this term is applicable to premodern sexual identities-differed markedly from that of Italy or England, so that Puff's research complements studies such as Michael Rocke's Forbidden Friendships: Homosexuality and Male Culture in Renaissance Florence (1996) as well as Alan Bray's Homosexuality in Renaissance England (1982). Following an introduction in which he lays the groundwork for a post-Foucauldian, non-teleological approach to the evolution of premodern and modern sexualities, Puff divides his study into two main sections consisting of four chapters each. The first section, Acts and Words, examines documents related to the regulation of homosexuality, including trial protocols, council records, and pastoral treatises. The second section of the book, Acting Words, explores various forms of calumny, polemics, and diatribe, in which the charge of sodomy was designed to slander political and religious opponents. The study closes with a short conclusion, an appendix of eighty-nine sodomy trials from 1277 through 1658, seventy-five pages of detailed notes, a comprehensive bibliography, and finally an index ranging from adultery to Zwingli. Puff's most noteworthy findings pertain to the distinct nature of homoerotic relations in Central Europe. Whereas most available documents concerning early modern homosexuality originated in urban settings, the trial records of Zurich and Lucerne, which ruled over extensive rural territories, allow insights into male-male desire in the countryside, where farmhands often slept in the same bed. …" @default.
