Abstract Riparian forests are extremely important for the maintenance and quality of water resources, sediment retention to prevent siltation in the rivers, and serve as shelter and food source for the terrestrial and aquatic fauna. It is necessary to observe how the scientific community is working with the theme of riparian forests. Therefore, this study aimed to raise the articles on riparian deposited in the databases Scopus and ScienceDirect, in order to meet the interests addressed by researchers, establishing state of the art regarding the studies on this type of vegetation. For the research, were used as search terms in Portuguese: ;;mata ciliar;;, ;;floresta ciliar;; in English and ;;ciliary forest;; and ;;riparian forest.;; Scopus database is the most appropriate to find articles in English and Portuguese. The term ;;riparian forest;; showed the highest number of results on both bases. The terms ;;floresta ciliar;; and ;;ciliary forest;; were the ones that proved to be less suitable for research because of the low number of published articles that were found. The number of articles that dealt with studies riparian forests been growing over the years, the two bases. Therefore, it is concluded that there is a growing interest of the scientific community in the study of issues related to riparian forests, but without interdisciplinary applications, which would contribute to the advancement of crosscutting issues and promote greater awareness of the importance of maintaining this type of vegetation." @default.
