- W79544369 abstract "Labyrinth in Chartres Cathedral is a hidden treasure. It was placed in the West end of the Nave around the year 1201. It is a forty-- two foot, circular pattern, inlaid in brown quarry stone with black onyx outline the path. This type of labyrinth-which is flat the floor-is called a pavement, or church labyrinth. labyrinth is often confused with a maze, yet it is exactly the opposite. A labyrinth has one path that starts from the outer edge and winds its way, in a very circuitous route, the center word for meditation in Latin is meditere, which means to find the center. purpose and use of the labyrinth has fallen into obscurity over the centuries. However, the officials of Chartres agree that the pilgrims walked it as a symbolic journey Jerusalem when the crusades made travel the Holy Land too dangerous. In our day, walking the labyrinth is a spiritual exercise that reminds us simply surrender the path and open our hearts those we meet on the way. winding path of the labyrinth reminds us put our trust in Jesus Christ, for He is leading the way. Rev. Canon Lauren Artress*** and the Labyrinth In the fall of 1998, I received an invitation that I accepted instantly: I had been asked give a series of meditations on the at Chartres Cathedral the following May. I would co-facilitate a weeklong retreat sponsored by Chartres Cathedral and Grace Episcopal Cathedral, San Francisco with the Reverend Dr. Lauren Artress. I was drawn this opportunity by several questions. What would I learn about that confirmed my experiences? What would these new lessons be in a thirteenth-century French cathedral dedicated her? What would I discover about the relationship between Mary, Chartres and the labyrinth? meditations that I gave in Chartres were titled Mary as Companion because I continue find in a friendship that has helped give meaning my life. When my husband was called be Bishop of Chicago, I was overwhelmed. How was I be a bishop's wife? On retreat prior our moving, I read and reread the story of the annunciation. I realized that my life was being directed, as well as my husband's, and I knew that was with me in my journey a new place and role. In preparation for the labyrinth retreat, I read Henry Adams' study, Mont Saint Michel and Chartres. I drew from this book several quotations that shaped my questions about the place. The architects took orders from the Virgin (p. 112). Assuming this is so, what is she trying tell us? The Cathedral is a woman's place. There is no fear, no punishment, no damnation. What is the iconography behind this statement? The Church is wholly given up the Mother and the Son. Father seldom appears and the Holy Ghost still more rarely (p. 102). How does see herself in relationship her Son in this space? Where do they appear together and how are they related? The Cathedral is a toy house please the Queen of Heaven-to-- please her so much that she would be happy in it, charm her till she smiled (p. 90). How would I feel in this space? Would I see smiling? Taking with me the assurance of the truth of my own experiences, the trust of a companioning and the curiosity born of new questions, I traveled France. Notre Dame de Chartres is one of the approximately eighty cathedrals begun in the twelfth century in France that are dedicated the Virgin. It is unique in that it was completed in just twenty-five-- years-a witness the energy and single-mindedness of the School of Chartres. It was a center of intellectual life of that era. A fire in 1194 destroyed most of the cathedral and its treasures. One of the most revered relics, the Veil of Mary, was miraculously saved and became the rallying point for a frenzied rebuilding project. Of the Marian cathedrals, twenty-two had labyrinths, but the only original eleven-- circuit labyrinth that remains is in Chartres. …" @default.
