J., has frequently been told but seldom do we find any reference to the brick meeting house erected in 1716 for ye Servis of ye Yearly Meeting. Bowden states 1 that a new meeting house 1 James Bowden, The History of the Society of Friends in America, Vol. 2 (London 1854), p. 250. A FORGOTTEN MEETING HOUSE109 was erected in Burlington in 1716 on ground given by Thomas Wetherill, which is correct excepting that Friends paid ten pounds for the lot. Amelia Mott Gummere correctly places it 2 on the northern side of Broad Street, east of High Street, adjoining the lot on which the Baptist Church now stands, but errs in stating that it was an ordinary dwelling, purchased and used by Friends as a meeting house. Both writers seem to have been a bit hazy as to their knowledge of this little-known meeting house. The following excerpts from the meeting records quite definitely prove that a meeting house was erected in 1716: At the Quarterly Meeting of ffrds held at our Meetinghous In Chesterfield this 28th of ye 9 m°, 1715. It is agreed at this Meeting that a Meeting hous be built In Burlington for the Servis of ye Yearly Meeting and that this Meeting will defray the Charge.
