- W79597259 abstract "Activation research provides a means for the investigation of induced activity problems which confront the aerospace industry. Its basic techniques and methods are those used in standard activation analysis; however, their use is toward different goals. Instead of seeking elemental composition of materials, the activation research program was more concerned with the effects and problems associated with induced activity. The results obtained from and the techniques used in the investigation of some nuclear-space problems are discussed. The dose rates resulting from vehicle structure activation were investigated. An analytical study of the dose rates expected from a space vehicle exposed to solar flare proton radjation was made. Experimental work has consisted of fission neutron activation of various types of materials. A more convenient method for calibrating U/sup 235/ fission spectrum neutron fluxes was developed using a modification of the sulfur-phosphorus technique. A special IBM 704 computer program, which utilizes a method of least squares fit for analyzing decaying complex gamma spectra data from a multi-channel pulse height analyzer was written. In addition, several U/sup 235/ fission neutron activation cross sections were verified and measured. The more » problem of possible contamination of a space vehicle's food supply through activation was studied. An analytical investigation was made to determine the cross sections required to produce concernable levels of contamination. dhe change in conductivity of a semiconductor material as a result of impurity atoms introduced through activation was investigated. This work included the computer programing of the solution of the build-up and decay equations which are used to compute the number of atoms of each isotope in a decay chain as a function of time during and after irradiation.
