The number of people and their specific needs for the internet are increasing daily. Although social, cultural, economic and political reasons can be counted as causes of this rapid expansion, it is the accessibility, low cost and user-friendly system that can be assumed as the reasons for the internet's popularity in Iran, especially among the youth.The internet has various features that can facilitate the life of the user. It can be a simple, inexpensive and fast way to send a letter to a friend, an efficient and effective tool to organize and manage a large social event, and an up-to-the-minute way of receiving and disseminating news. Ultimately, there is that basic element which can be seen in most internet use and that is that the internet connects people together. This connection can take different forms and the most impacting and explosive aspect in recent years is virtual social network websites.Many social networking websites have emerged in recent years, have become popular and have declined. Some of these social networking sites are popular in just one country such as Vkontakte (popular in Russia, Ukraine) or Draugiem.Lv (popular in Latvia). Bebo, Hi 5, and Orkut underwent a big increase in the number of users a few years ago but after a while started to decline. Some social networks are specifically geared to specialists like Academia for academics or Researchgate used by researchers to connect. But it can be claimed that the most important social networking website to emerge in recent years is Facebook.In its inception, the concept behind Facebook was developed by Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin in their Harvard dorm room in February 2004. By the end of 2005, it had 5.5 million active users dramatically increasing to more than 500 million active users by 2010 (http://www.face book.com/press/info.php?timeline).Unfortunately, there is not an exact statistics of Iranian Facebook users currently available; however, a very rough estimation can show that there are at least 6.5 million active Facebook users in Iran. By considering such factors as cultural condition or internet usage rate in Iran and comparing them to other countries such as Turkey or Pakistan, this number can be larger. Of greater importance are the social effects of Facebook which can be seen in the speed of its growing popularity among the younger generation. With Facebook assuming important social and sometimes political roles, it can be the cause of familial conflicts between old and new generations. Arguments against the use of Facebook and its effects on social norms make the internet and specifically Facebook an attractive field for researchers to explore.Facebook gives users the opportunity to create and present their online identities to their audience. To enroll on this website, people are required to create an online identity by answering various questions and reproduce it via the website. Two main factors always affect identities in the real world: gender and religion. Religion as an important cultural factor (especially for Muslims) defines and shapes real world expectations of the gender. Because of that, it would be useful to examine the role religion plays in creating and defining gender identity online in a virtual setting.
