- W796559925 abstract "The size of concrete pipes which can currently be used for pipe jacking is governed by transport facilities. The limits are set by weight and size. The customary method of pipe jacking is to press a length of piping into the ground from the rear, additional pipe sections being added continuously. For long lengths, intermediate jacking stations may be required. The pipes are loaded transversely by earth pressure and traffic, and longitudinally by the jacking force, the magnitude of which is difficult to estimate and which can be controlled by special measures such as lubrication with bentonite suspension. Large diameter pipes are manufactured using the spinning or rolling process, in recent times also the vibration process. Reinforcement cages are manufactured in automatic welding machines. The individual pipe sections are jointed together in accordance with the particular requirements, for instance internal or external water tightness, use of compressed air, stresses during jacking. Jacking usually takes place from a pit which is large enough to accommodate the jacking equipment, one length of pipe and the driving shoe or cutting edge. The jacking method can be used even for relatively large cross sections. This is exemplified by the construction of an underpass under a motorway using this method. /TRRL/" @default.
