- W796667107 abstract "This chapter investigates how singing and prayer in the gatherings of Christians came into existence and developed and how they functioned in the context of these gatherings in the first three centuries. Singing was an important feature of Graeco-Roman culture in general, including Judaism; however, scholars do not agree as to the origin of singing in the Christian Church. Prayer was also a constitutive element in gatherings and at communal meals of numerous groups in the Hellenistic world, both pagan and Jewish. Carrying on a Jewish practice, the early Christians blessed God at the celebration of their eucharistic supper; they also prayed other types of prayers during their gathering.
