- W79684405 abstract "The most intransient and characteristic responses to stress involve the neurally-mediated release of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla and the neuroendocrine cascade of events that result in the secretion of glucocorticoids from the adrenal cortex. The location of the sympathetic preganglionic neurons that innervate the adrenal medulla has been known for some time1. Over the past decade, a number of cell groups and transmitter systems have been identified in a position to interact with adrenal preganglionic neurons2.3. More recently, with the isolation, characterization, and localization of a peptide that has met the criteria predicted for the principal corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) of the hypothalamus4, both the neural and the hormonal influences on the central limb of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis have been exposed to experimental scrutiny. In addition, these developments have permitted us to concern ourselves with the issue of integration, that is, how these “stress responses” are achieved in the context of other demands on the organism’s ability to cope effectively with any given perturbation in its internal or external environment." @default.
