- W79821094 abstract "EnglishBetween 1750 and 1850, an image of Normandy arose based on the province's position in France. This image was worked out in three centers: Paris, England and Normandy itself where local elites were especially active. From the writings of Lepecq de la Cloture to Jules Michelet's Tableau de la France, new grounds were laid for the province's geography; and the old stereotype of the litigating Norman gave way before the first ethnological accounts and the interest shown by writers. In the 18th century, the better educated in the province and in England took interest in a past that the French Revolution would soon take to be the major basis for the province's identity. Literary sources, monuments and legends were identified, thus turning Normandy into a school for the Middle Age. @default.
