It has been stated to predict future health, use of health services and survival and mortality. Since Mossey and Saphiro 1982 observed that self-rated health predicts mortality there has been a lot of studies of self-rated health. These later studies have confirmed the results of Mosey and Saphiro. The purpose of this study was to investigate if self-rated health predicts the remaining lifetime among older men and women. The data in this study are from Evergreen research project, conducted in 1988 at Jyvaskyla and subjects followed for vital status until 18.12.2013. The data consist of 589 home-dwelling men and women, who were born in 1904 – 1913 and all of whom had died before the end of follow-up and consequently their life-span is known. First data were analysed by computing frequencies and cross-tabulations. Self-rated health as a predictor of remaining length of life and longevity (surviving at least to 90 years of age) was analysed with linear and binary logistic regression model. In 1988 participants were 74 – 84 years old. They died at the average age 86 years. 18.4 % of the men and 36.3 % of the women lived at least to 90 years of age. Of participants 36.2 % rated their health as good, 40.4 % as average and 26.8% as poor. At the baseline older persons rated health better than the younger ones. Self-rated health predicted the remaining lifetime in this study even after adjustments for age at 1988, gender, occupation, education, number of the chronic illnesses, smoking, drinking and exercise.
