- W79876937 abstract "Rotational tunneling of small molecules, molecular groups and ions in solids at low temperatures has been studied extensively in recent years by inelastic neutron scattering [1]. Most of the experimental results could be explained on the basis of a theory emphasizing the extreme single particle character of the tunneling motion [2] Coupling between different molecular groups, leading to a collective rotational motion, can be expected to be important in cases where groups are located close together. The potential governing the motion of a group consists of terms due to this coupling and terms due to the essentially rigid remainder of the crystal lattice. If the former are small compared with the latter, the spectral structure resulting from coupling is difficult to resolve. However, cooperative phenomena can be observable for systems with low single particle potential barriers and short distances between groups." @default.
