- W800449743 abstract "Ever since the Renaissance, scholars have been intrigued by the pagan religion which the Frisians practiced before they were converted to Christianity. Jacob Grimm played an important part in exploring new sources to help shape a picture of the Frisians' pagan past. According to Roest Crollius, the process of inculturation can be distinguished in three successive stages, which however interrelate and can be concomitant. The first stage is translation. This chapter shows how 'Christ' entered the Frisian language, and how his being Dominus was given shape. The second phase in the process of inculturation comprises the assimilation by which the Church adapts itself to the indigenous culture and becomes part of it. The last phase in the process of inculturation - transforming the indigenous culture into a Christian one is best illustrated with what transformation had done to the centrepiece of the Frisian legal system.
