• W80101140 abstract "On the premise that the formation of tonal hierarchies relates to tonal motion – for example, the tendency for pitches perceptually to ‘gravitate’ more strongly towards the tonic – this paper explores the issue of tonal hierarchies in terms of resolution and pull between pitches. Interval periodicity vectors are shown positively to correlate with Krumhansl and Kessler’s (1982) major and minor key tonal hierarchies. The goal of the study was therefore to determine whether interval periodicity is cognitively associated with feelings of resolution and pull, and hence a causal basis of tonal hierarchies. A theory of tonal motion is proposed, the interval dynamism hypothesis, which is tested experimentally. The results of the experiment significantly agreed with the predictions of the hypothesis: that strong feelings of resolution and pull are associated with high-value periodicity intervals, and weak feelings of resolution and pull are associated with low-value periodicity intervals. It is conjectured that the tonal hierarchies observed by Krumhansl and others are a function of the periodicity vectors of pre-probe-tone contexts that frequently use dominant/tonic chord progressions.
