- W80142114 abstract "The newer human enteroviruses (EVs) traditionally comprised four serotypes, EVs 68 through 71. While EV68 and EV69 have been rarely isolated from clinical specimens, both EV70 and EV71 are globally important human pathogens causing acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis and hand-foot-and-mouth disease with systemic complications, respectively. Taxonomically, the four serotypes are distributed in three different human enterovirus (HEV) species. EV68 and EV70 belong to the species HEV-D, EV69 to HEV-B, and EV71 to HEV-A. Adoption of phylogenetic analysis of the capsid protein VP1 coding sequences for serotype identification opened an avenue for identification of conventionally non-typable enterovirus strains. As a consequence, by mid-2006, almost 30 new HEV types have been identified and the running number of new types is beyond 100. The newly identified types are distributed in all four HEV species. For most of them, very little biological, clinical, or epidemiological information is available. However, it is clear that many of them are not really new because they either had been originally isolated decades ago or seroprevalence studies indicate that they have been circulating in human populations long ago." @default.
