The new historiography of is committed to an emphasis on contextualism over essentialism, complexity over simple binaries and stable identities. It focuses on diachronic change over stability. Categories such as esotericism and the occult have been connected to notions of rejected and stigmatised knowledge. This chapter addresses question of higher knowledge actually thought to be achieved in esoteric discourses. Esoteric spokespersons answered problem of disenchantment by rejecting call for an intellectual sacrifice in order to obtain knowledge of metaphysics, morals, and values.
