- W803482162 abstract "This chapter explores how the city/text, left unfinished in the early chapters of Genesis, becomes a migrational metaphor in the imagining of cities that boast their own ambitious towers, particularly New York and Paris. By linking these iconic cities with Babel, the chapter examines how this biblical text and its interpretation haunt some of our own urban constructions. Engaging some of the work of Roland Barthes, Michel de Certeau and Jacques Derrida, and read alongside biblical scholars Claus Westermann and Gerhard von Rad, the chapter analyses and extends the reach of what Barthes calls the 'Babel-complex'. Examining how the biblical story lives on as an imaginative blueprint in the commentary around architectural feats such as the Eiffel Tower and The World Trade Center enables the author to move between the textual rendering of Babel, the psycho-social discourse around the meaning of such towers, and their material construction and destruction. Keywords: Babel-complex; biblical text; Eiffel Tower; Genesis; New York" @default.
