- W804566719 abstract "The peculiarities of work-related stress experienced by individuals who work in a prison environment increase their susceptibility to develop psychological disorders as a result from chronic stress. Given this information, this study was carried out in order to identify alcohol consumption patterns and its relationship with the Burnout Syndrome and with the sociodemographic factors for the employees of the county penitentiary facility in Itirapina-SP, Brazil. The study is presented in two chapters. The first chapter covers a literature review consulting the databases Pubmed and Bireme in order to identify the association between the Burnout Syndrome and alcohol consumption. The second chapter identifies the pattern of alcohol consumption and its association with the Burnout Syndrome dimensions and the sociodemographic and work variables for the workers of the municipal penitentiary in Itirapina-SP, Brazil. The non-probabilistic sampling design was adopted for the sake of convenience. To identify the alcoholrelated disorders the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) was used and for the Burnout Syndrome the Maslach Burnout Inventory – General Survey, (MBI-GS) was used. The study included 336 employees, average age of 40.2 (S.D.=8.8 years), of which 81.0% are male participants. Of the participants, 78.6% (IC95%=74.2-82.9%) reported consuming alcohol, whereas 22.32%, (IC95%=17.9-26.8%) showed risk drinking patterns. among the individuals who reported drinking alcohol (p <0.001), higher mean scores were observed for Exhaustion and Doubt and lower scores for Professional Achievement. Alcohol consumption was higher among the males (p <0.001) that do not live in the city where they work (p=0.037), the prison unit PII (p=0.049), the professional Penitentiary Surveillance and Escort Agents category (p= 0.012), with 12h workload and 36h rest (p=0.049), with no religious practices (p<0.001) and smokers (p=0.001). There was a high prevalence of alcohol consumption among the penitentiary workers and a significant relationship with the Burnout Syndrome dimensions and sociodemographic and work variables." @default.
