- W80519074 abstract "The evaluation of the information content of satellite data about different cover types is important for ecological studies. In particular, it is fundamental for the multispectral scenes acquired on vegetated surfaces by the Landsat Thematic Mapper, which was specifically planned for terrestrial applications. Such information content depends on several factors which can not be established “a priori” and, above all, it can strongly vary during a growing season due to phenological variations of plants. A nonparametric method based on Mutual Information Analysis was recently proposed by the authors to estimate the information expressed by TM images about digitized cover categories. In the present work this property is employed to measure the information content of three TM acquisitions from a rural area of Tuscany in different seasons (winter, spring and summer). Six vegetation cover categories were considered representative for four main plant associations (coniferous and deciduous woods, olive groves and vine-yards). The information content of the TM scenes was very different for these associations and strongly variable during the growing season. These results are of high interest for their ecological implications and should be kept in mind when dealing with multitemporal TM imagery." @default.
