Because the internal processes of the earth are thermally driven, heat flow measurements are typically used to study tectonics. Regional heat flow values contain information on the thermal structure of the lithosphere and some aspects of the geochemistry of the crust. This chapter discusses the equipment for measurement of temperature, thermal conductivity, and heat production from radioactive decay. It describes the equipment associated with well testing and reservoir evaluation and/or determination of various water flow parameters. These methods are generally regarded as a part of reservoir engineering and/or hydrology.
