- W80767259 abstract "Two large groups of parasitic flagellates that have held the interest of parasitologists are the Trypanosomidae and the Trichomonadinae. These groups comprise numerous species and almost all of them are parasitic. Some of these are the pathogens that are capable of causing severe infections; others appear to have merely a commensal action and are tolerated by the host. Some are easily cultured in vitro; others multiply poorly outside their natural host. Their biological characteristics make them extremely varied and interesting as material for research. The comparison of their growth factor requirements or their power of synthesis with those of free-living protozoa constitutes a subject of the greatest interest. The Trypanosomidae are a homogenous group of flagellates, all parasites to a greater or less degree. Certain characteristics are common to many representatives of the group; others are restricted to a few species or even to a few strains. However, the trichomonads are flagellates which are for the most part parasitic; only a few free-living species are known." @default.
