- W807684028 abstract "The major objectives of this study were to determine the feasibility of constructing a pcc pavement over bituminous-treated and cement-treated bases and the structural requirements of a roadbed which would meet the increased demands of traffic volumes and loads which are to be expected in the future. An experimental test project was constructed on Interstate 94 near Rothsay, Minnesota. The test project consisted of two sections each of bituminous-treated base, cement-treated base and conventional gravel base. The concrete pavement on each test section was divided into two segments, one being 9 in. thick and the other 8 in. Each segment was further divided into two sub-segments, one having dowel bars across the joints and the other without dowel bars. The three base sections were construced according to Minnesota Highway Department Specifications. Monitoring was done during construction to note any problems associated with the construction of the experimental sections. Evaluation to determine the predicted performance of the experimental sections was done primarily by means of strain measurements, Benkelman beam tests, thermocouple readings roadmeter and roughometer tests. The more important findings and conclusions from this study are as follows: 1. Some cracks occurred in the concrete pavement in the cement-treated base sections. These appeared to be the reflectance of cracks in the cement-treated base. 2. The gravel base sections were easier, less time-consumming and cheaper to construct than either the cement-treated or bituminous-treated base sections. However, the data do not permit a determination as whether any section is superior in long-term performance. 3. The data collected comparing 9 in. vs 3 in. pavement thickness, doweled vs undowled joints and stabilized vs unstabilized bases show no improvement in the present pavement serviceablity. This study verified that it is feasible to use a cement-treated or bituminous-treated base as a substitute for a gravel base under a pcc surface. But, because of the short duration of this study, conclusions cannot be drawn regarding long-term benefits of one base as compared with another." @default.
