- W80817200 abstract "Abstract Michel Fokine's Les Sylphides, probably the most widely and consistently performed ballet of this century since its Paris debut in 1909 by the Diaghilev Ballet Russes, has survived for seventy years as a popular example of its creator's contributions to the development of modern ballet choreography. Essentially an examination of the reasons for the ballet's longevity, this paper deals with the structure of the work and the impact of Fokine's choreographic innovations on twentieth-century dance. His five choreographic principles, printed in the London Times on July 6, 1914, are used to identify the innovations of Les Sylphides, including the introduction of flowing port de bras and an extended use of epaulement, the liberation of the ensemble from the hierarchial groupings employed in nineteenth-century ballets, and the emphasis on the more subtle qualities of controlled balances, the seemingly effortless flow of the dancers' movements, and their ability to create and sustain a mood. The flexible, economical nature of Les Sylphides as an abstract, one-act ballet requiring no props or scenery helped it to survive in the repertoire of struggling companies during the years following Diaghilev's death. Personal interviews with dancers who worked under Fokine at one time (Alexandra Danilova, Nathalie Krassovska, Madame Nora Kiss, and others) provide interesting accounts of the choreographer's variations in re-staging the ballet for various European and American ballet troupes over the years, but also indicate that a surprising consistency in steps and performance style has been maintained and carefully handed down from one generation of dancers to the next." @default.
