- W80836319 abstract "This chapter discusses extracellular calcium regulating the cellular functions. Cytoplasmic calcium (Ca2+) controls a variety of cellular responses, such as exocytotic secretion, cellular differentiation and proliferation, and muscular contraction. The levels of extracellular Ca2+ in the blood and interstitial fluids modulate a number of vital cellular processes, including thrombosis, muscle and nerve excitability, and proper bone formation. Ca2+ receptor regulates cellular activity. Most of the information about Ca2+ is derived from the study of cells involved in systemic Ca2+ homeostasis.. The cells of the parathyroid glands and kidney can identify small changes in the concentration of extracellular Ca2+, and extracellular Ca2+ by itself can profoundly influence cellular activity. The chapter discusses the structure of calcium receptors, including the diseases that can be caused by mutation in the Ca2+ receptor gene. The calcium receptor-dependent regulation of cellular functions has been discussed, including the parathyroid cells, parafollicular cells, the renal epithelial cells, and other extracellular Ca2+ -sensing cells. It is mentioned that The Ca2+ receptor is a G-protein-coupled receptor and is structurally homologous to metabotropic glutamate receptors. It is also mentioned that the Ca2+ receptor is the first example of an inorganic ion receptor. The chapter concludes by stating that Ca2+ has an important messenger function throughout the body." @default.
