- W808534703 abstract "The extermination of European Jewry presents literature with an ethical conundrum which is simultaneously a crisis of representation, a crisis of witnessing, and a crisis of narrating. The Shoah is 'but' a special case of a trauma inherent to the modern subject. This chapter compares two works in which the missed encounter with the real is indeed sought through what presents itself as documentary realism on the one hand and something one might term, for lack of a better expression, magical realism on the other: W.G. Sebald's prose fiction, especially The Emigrants and Austerlitz and David Grossman's See Under: Love . The Holocaust survivors surrounding Anshel Wasserman in Tel Aviv and then again figuring in the Children of the Heart -stories are given equally caricaturesque, if not downright revolting appearances. A fitting analogy for the artistic aporia in both Sebald's and Grossman's work is found in the final section of The Emigrants . Keywords: Anshel Wasserman; Austerlitz; Children of the Heart; David Grossman; European Jewry; Holocaust survivors; See Under: Love; Shoah; The Emigrants; W.G. Sebald" @default.
