- W809096934 abstract "This paper presents a summary of results from a programme of research into anti-lock braking systems (ABS). The first part of the programme involved the assessment of various car and commercial vehicle systems. Four different lorries (HGVs) and seven different cars (including one 4 wheel drive) were tested. Three different lorry configurations were used: a) tractor only; b) tractor and unladen trailer; and c) tractor and laden trailer. Most of the testing was done to compare the braking performance of a vehicle with its anti-locking system functioning, to that with it disabled. Braking tests were performed on various surfaces. Split surface tests were also undertaken to measure the effectiveness of the antilocking to prevent lock-wheel instabilities. Stopping distances were measured for all tests. The causes of 150 fatal accidents were also analysed to ascertain the possible benefits of anti-lock use. The results clearly indicate that use of ABS can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. The FMECA (Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis) technique is then used to ascertain how and how often ABS and conventional braking systems might fail.
