• W80932973 abstract "The transport amd magnetic properties of mixed-valence semiconductors are studied. It is assumed that the conduction involves a thermally activated process in which the charge carriers jump from site to site. The activation energy, DELTA H/sub c/, required for a jump is calculated assuming that a jump can only take place whem the atomic configuration surrounding a charge carrier and that surrounding a neighboring site are energetically equivalent. This activation energy is related to the force constants amd in turn to the differences in size of the cation in the two valence states. The trapping mechanism is shown to be more plausible than the long-range polarization effects previously proposed. A calculatiom of the Seebeck coefficient ( alpha ) on the model shows that the contribution owing to the activated process is normally small and of the order of 1/20 DELTA H/sub c//eT. Magnetic effects give rise to a small contribution to alpha amd slightly modify the temperature dependence of the electric conductivity. No discontinuities in the transport properties are expected at the Curie temperature.
