- W81072585 abstract "We argue that the use of animal studies to examine higher functions of the human brain should not be dismissed without a careful consideration of four factors. First, there should be a re-evaluation of the anatomical basis of human apraxia. The anatomical basis of clinical apraxia in humans is unlikely to be neocortical but probably involves combined damage of both cortical and subcortical structures. Second, the behaviours that are studied in apraxic syndromes should be fractionated in such a way that they parallel the anatomical systems that produce different types of movement. Third, the movements should be described and quantified in such a way that the severity and generality of any deficit can be easily assessed. Fourth, mammals display both learned and species-typical behavioural patterns that can be used in the study of praxis. We conclude that further progress in understanding the nature of apractic syndromes will only come through the careful study and quantification of both learned and species-typical movements of humans and other animals and that the study of nonhuman animals can aid significantly in the study of praxis (and apraxia) in humans." @default.
