As far back as the 14 century, an anonymous European poet complained of excessive street noise (Gimpel 1977). An 18 century print by William Hogarth, The Enraged Musician, depicts indignation when street sounds invade his studio. Thompson (2002) provides a summary of the political failure to manage noise pollution beginning in the late 19 century. Recent studies reveal that personal knowledge about the dangers of loud music is frequently insufficient to change behavior (Miller et al. 2007; Rawool & Colligon-Wayne 2008). Other studies described the physical, social, cognitive, and emotional consequences of hearing disabilities (Arlinger 2003; Zimbardo et al. 1981; Roth 1955), which often result from repeated exposure to loud sound." @default.
