- W8146220 abstract "The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Second Edition-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Teilegen & Ben-Porath, 2008) is the recent restructuring of the MMPI-2. Research on the MMPI-2 L scale (Duris, Bjorck, and Gorsuch, 2007) found that Christians endorsed a false response to some items more than the normal population, resulting in elevated L scale scores. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of the restructuring of the L scale on the evaluation of outpatient Christian test-takers. Archival data were collected from 166 case files of outpatients receiving services at a university-based psychological services center. Results indicated that the Christian religious endorsement sample demonstrated a higher mean L-r scale score than the MMPI-2-RF normative sample. Several L-r scale items identified in previous research were similarly endorsed in this study, but few items were differentially endorsed between genders in the Christian sample. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI; Hathaway & McKinley, 1943; 1951) and its revision, the MMPI-2 (Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989), have been the most extensively utilized and researched objective personality and psychopathology inventories (Austin, 1992). The MMPI has been used in the examination of a variety of groups, but religious populations were among the first to be explored (Bier, 1948). By the time of its revision (Butcher et al., 1989), an extensive amount of research had been performed with religious groups (Ashbrook & Powell, 1967; Banks, Mooney, Mucowski, & Williams, 1984; Celmer & Winer, 1990; Dunn; 1965; Gynther & Kempson, 1962; Jansen, Bonk, & Garvey, 1973; Keddy, Erdberg, & Sammon, 1990; Nauss, 1973; Patrick, 1990, 1991; Vaughan, 1965)· Some studies have even examined if separate norms should be collected for the MMPI for religious populations (e.g., Bier, 1971); however, no definitive difference was ultimately discovered when using religious group norms (Weisgerber, 1965).Compared to the amount of research on religious groups using the MMPI, research on the utilization of the MMPI-2 (Butcher et al., 1989) with this population has been less abundant (see MacDonald & Holland, 2003)· Similar to studies utilizing the MMPI, though, much of the research on religious populations using the MMPI-2 explored the personality characteristics of seminarians or religious leadership (Duris et al., 2007; Falkenhain, Duckro, Hughes, Rossetti, Gfeller, 1999; Gamino, Sewell, Mason, & Crostley, 2007; Plante, 2007; Plante & Apodaca, 2011). There have also been studies that have explored specific MMPI-2 scales with religious groups (e.g., Duris et al., 2007). One such scale is the Lie (£) scale (Meehl & Hathaway, 1946).Meehl and Hathaway (1946) developed the 15item MMPI L scale based upon Hartshorne and May's (1928, as cited by Meehl & Hathaway, 1946; see also Dahlstrom, Welsh, & Dahlstrom, 1972) method of scale construction. The L scale was created in order to identify unsophisticated attempts by test-takers to present an excessively positive image of themselves based upon a lack of endorsement of relatively minor characterological faults (Graham, 2006). In the process of creating the MMPI-2, none of the 15 original items were removed from the L scale, and only two items were revised slightly (Butcher & Graham, 1994). Tellegen and Ben-Porath (2008) developed the MMPI-2-RF Uncommon Virtues (L-r) scale which included slight revisions to the L scale. Utilizing a factor analytic method, three items that originally contributed to the L scale were not included in the MMPI-2-RF, and one item was no longer included as a component of the L-r scale. Three items, which were originally included in the Wiggins Social Desirability (Wsd; Wiggins, 1959) scale, were then added, resulting in a total of 14 items on the L-r scale. …" @default.
