- W814982685 abstract "Training novice or veteran teachers to meet demands is a continual challenge for those working and teaching in states where there are laws regarding implementation of Indian education during instructional process of developing and teaching content area lessons. Indian education, throughout this study, will be defined as history and of Montana's and South Dakota's Indian people. Fortunately, there has been a lot of support with this integration, especially in researchers' states of Montana and South Dakota. The problem is, not only are teachers required to integrate Indian education in their regular coursework, it is also necessary for educators to consider an assessment piece when asking themselves: Am I truly effective with my teaching and are my students learning what they need to learn? (Witte, 2012, p. 3).In 21st century, assessment is at forefront in education (DeLuca & Klinger, 2010; Graham, 2005). This discussion is important because in 2002 President George W. Bush signed into law No Child Left Behind (NCLB), which required assessment of all students in several grade levels (Popham, 2011). With emphasis being placed on inclusion of American Indian education in all classrooms across both Montana and South Dakota, researchers sought to discover whether former students (novice and veteran teachers), who took an American Indian studies course, planned for inclusion of assessment practices along with Indian history and integration.Teachers have seen a shift in focus and purpose of assessment in their classrooms and schools with change in education policy. Even with integration of Indian education, inclusion of an assessment piece should be no different. Both Montana and South Dakota have recently adopted Common Core Standards along with most states in country. Even though standards are common, individual states can include other important content as they see fit. The Montana Office of Public Instruction along with educators from around state have integrated and continue to integrate the distinct and unique heritage and contemporary contributions of American Indians in a culturally responsive manner in their common core standards. (Montana Office of Public Instruction, 2011, p. 3). In South Dakota Office of Indian Education obtained funding to develop materials for Indian Education Act which mandated development of course content for curriculum and coursework in South Dakota Indian history and (South Dakota Department of Education, 2011).As two teacher educators analyzed survey data collected from former students of their American Indian education courses, it was not so much integration of American Indian history and they are looking for, as it is integration of assessment along with integration of history and in content area courses. Witte (2012) states,Assessment serves as a complement to and direct part of instructional process. If assessment is not part of instructional learning process, then a classroom lesson is just a teacher-led activity that lacks confirmation of learning impact and attainment of desired outcomes for learners involved in that lesson or instructional experience, (p. 3)BackgroundIndian Education. Two American Indian studies teacher educators examined whether their former students, who are now teaching, included assessment practices when integrating Indian history and in their content area lessons. There has been a lot of interest and conversation about integration of Indian history and culture, especially in researchers' states of South Dakota and Montana (Kelting-Gibson & Sorknes, 2010). In South Dakota, pre-service teachers are required to take a course in Indian studies, specifically, South Dakota Indian Studies. In 2007, the Indian Education Act mandated development of course content for curriculum and coursework in South Dakota American Indian history and culture (South Dakota Department of Education, 2011). …" @default.
