- W815209741 abstract "124arthuriana Interpretation of the Merlin-Nimue relationship. There is also Phyllis Ann Karr's 'Squire Kay in Love,' showing us a first experience ofconflicting loyalties, Darrell Schweitzer's dark and haunting tale 'The Last Giant ofAlbion,' and Nancy Varian Berberick's 'Hel's Laughter,' portraying Rowena and her marriage to Vortigern in a fashion that creates sympathy for the Saxon princess in the most pro-Celtic hearts. Together with the two poems, Marcie Lynn Tentchoff's 'Nimue's Song' and Andrew H. W. Smith's 'The Enthronement of Arthur,' these four selections are also remarkable for their language, whether it be transparent, hardly noticed as the reader is caught up in the story, or noticably present, sometimes charmingly apt and elegant, sometimes rich, allusive, and archaic. There are also some stories which are not successful; indeed, some ofthe stories suffer from a flatness oflanguage, often because ofover-elaboration or an archaism which fails to work. A few stories fail to portray the characters with even a minimum ofcredibility; any attempt to depict the heroes and heroines of romances as human beings must include some understandable motivation and reaction. Still, the good stories in Legends ofthe Pendragon well outweigh the less than good ones. Ifa collection ofshort stoties has a birthday feeling to it, this was quite a good birthday. KRISTINA HILDEBRAND University College Halmstad Nicholas orme, Medieval Chiblren. New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2001. Pp. xii, 387. isbn: 0-300-08541-9 (hbk); 0-300-09754-9 (pbk). $39.95/$?9·95· This is a wonderful book: it is humane, scholarly, readable, and accessible, an unusual combination. Nicholas Orme, professor of history ar Exeter University and the author ofmore than a dozen scholarly books relating to education and the English West Country in the Middle Ages, has brought his long experience and formidable mastery ofthe sources to bear on this survey ofchildren and childhood in medieval England. Apart from the virtues ofthe text, the book is also beautifully illustrated, a rarity at the reasonable paperback price. Orme has arranged his material thematically. The nine chapters roughly follow the course ofachild's life from birth to the threshold ofadulthood, coveringArriving; Family Life; Danger and Death; Words, Rhymes, and Songs; Play; Church; Learning to Read; Reading for Pleasure; and Growing Up. The chronological scope of the book extends from the Anglo-Saxon period to the mid-sixteenth century. Often a thematic presentation ofsuch a vast time span will minimize change over time, yet Orme deals sensitively throughout the book with diachronic variation. As evidence is so much more plentiful for the later Middle Ages, the emphasis tends to lie in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; there are nonetheless many illuminating discussions ofearlier practices and trends. The nature ofthe evidence also demands that greater attention be paid to the upper reaches ofsociety than to the lower. For the most part Orme is judicious in his assessment of the wider applicability of evidence that relates to royal or noble children (always so much better documented), and as far as possible, he has sought out and found evidence that relates to the lower REVIEWS125 reaches ofsociety. He has also considered carefullythe gendered nature ofchildhood experiences in medieval England. Medieval Chiblren is based on original, mostly published, sources rather than secondary authorities (only rarely will Orme comment on a scholarly debate). As such, it is not a guide to the scholarship on the subject, but it is a treasure trove of medieval evidence on a host ofsubjects, all meticulously noted in the unobtrusive but full scholarly apparatus. Orme's overall argument is that children were integral to society, and this means that his book discusses many aspects of medieval life, from the metaphysical (conceptualizations oftime and the afterlife) to the mundane (dress, diet, toileting). Yet the obvious erudition is never dry or pompous; Medieval Chiblren is gracefully written and eminently suitable for classroom use and general readership. The next time a non-academic friend or relative asks you to recommend something 'interesting' to read on the Middle Ages, suggest this book. Orme begins his book with a discussion of Philippe Aries's infamous theories about the absence of a distinctive concept of childhood or..." @default.
