- W81624504 abstract "ABSTRACT Consisting mostly of water and salt, solar ponds are one of the least expensive modes of active solar energy collection available. It is however widely assumed that the technology cannot be put to efficient use under latitudes larger than 40°. Our experience with an experimental pond at a latitude of 45°N, and extrapolations to the behavior of ponds at higher latitudes based on computer simulations, indicate that solar ponds can be used economically for space and industrial heating applications at latitudes much larger than 40°. The generation of electric power, while not presently competitive economically with conventional sources in northern interconnected grids, may be justifiable in remote areas during the summer, if the leftover heat stored in the pond is used for space heating in winter. A technology developed specifically for ensuring the monitoring and maintenance of solar ponds under harsh northern climates is then described." @default.
