- W816687070 abstract "Xi was sitting on the edge of a straw mattress. A cool wind came in through the gaps in the stone that could've been called windows if they had once been filled with glass, but could only be called rectangular gaps now. The first rays of the rising sun announced that it was time to get to work, but Xi spent a few more moments than usual in suspense. He was hesitating because his wife, ChangChang, wasn't up before him, as usual. He finally decided to stir her and nudged her shoulder. Chang exploded in a string of violent coughing and sat up in bed to avoid choking on the blood that bubbled in her mouth. Breathing heavily, she weakly walked outside in her night shirt and spat the blood out across the grass. When she came back in, she went to the stove and started preparing breakfast.Xi felt a deep sympathy with his wife, but couldn't articulate a soothing sentence that might cheer her up or help her in some way. She was trained at cooking and cleaning as a child. Xi was responsible for manlier tasks, and barely knew how to boil rice. Chang's coughing awoke the other residents of the stone house, which lacked interior walls, housing in one large room twelve near and distant relatives. This small tribe was composed of two young wives, twelve and thirteen, who had cooked before, but hadn't passed ChangChang's breakfast standards. Xi wife's parents were there too, but were both sick with various undiagnosed diseases and would never be asked to assist with breakfast. The two young wives both had new babies, with bloated stomachs and thin, limp arms. The tribe's grooming was varied. The young wives shared a toothbrush. They even washed in the nearby spring every other day because they were raised in a neighboring village, where there was running water. The elderly couple only had a couple of loose teeth left, so they didn't worry about such regiments. The babies had to be washed in the morning to wipe the poop off their bums, which were wrapped in rags or left unclothed. The smell from all of these human fumes was temporarily lifted when the steam from the mantous spread from the stove. Everybody grabbed their work-attire from a weaved, storage basket. A couple had jeans and a T-shirt they inherited from a factory-worker in the city that traded them for a bed and a meal when he was coming through. Others had home-made dresses and simple pants. Chang was the best clothes maker in the family, but the young wives were starting to help out with sowing and knitting. Chang was teaching them needlesowing after work, but by then they were so tired that it was a steep learning curve. The family now sat in a circle on the floor around the pot of mantous and ate one each, grabbing a mantou out of the pot with chop sticks. There was enough sunlight in the room now for the babies to stare curiously at the family gathering. When Xi was young, he always wanted seconds, but lately eating turned into a nightmare as his ulcers caused severe bleeding from all ends, abdominal pain and as a result made him faint and anemic because of the heavy loss of blood. Xi was fifty now and had lived through at least one major disease each year since he was a baby, but these ulcers from the h-pylori in their contaminated water supply had continued for five years. They were exhausting him, and he could feel that his body was starting to give up the fight. If he lived in the city, he might have saved enough money to buy pills at a hospital in those five years, but Xi couldn't imagine moving. Xi was born in that house. The closest village school was ten miles away, and books were prohibitively expensive, so Xi only learned the letter that spelled his name and otherwise was illiterate. He dreamed of a year when they'd have an enormous crop and he'd save enough to go to the city for schooling, but then those plans were permanently diverted by an arranged marriage to the neighbor's daughter, ChangChang. Chang became pregnant and had a baby soon after the marriage. …" @default.
