- W817095000 abstract "Association between walking ability and lung function among 63-76-year-old females in Finland Maria Alaoja University of Jyvaskyla Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences Department of Health Sciences Spring 2005 Master’s Thesis in Sport and Exercise Medicine 47 pages The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between walking ability and lung function among 63-76-year-old females. The data is part of the material of the Finnish Twin Study on Aging (FITSA). 434 twin females participated in examinations in 2000-2001 in the Sport and Health Laboratory of University of Jyvaskyla. Those 351 women who performed flow-volume spirometry (VC, FVC, FEV1, FEV%, PEF), 6 minute walking test and 10 meter walking test were included in this analysis. In addition maximal isometric muscle strength of the knee extensors was used as a covariate in the analyses. First the results were described with means, standard deviations, confidence intervals and ranges. Pearson’s correlation was used to describe the association between continuous variables. The subjects were classified into tertiles separately based on each flow-volume spirometry variable. Accordingly, a classification of “sick” and “healthy” subjects was determined based on whether the subject blowed under or over the lower limiting value of normal. One-way ANOVA and analysis of covariance were used to examine differences between groups. Linear regression analysis was used to evaluate independent lung function variables explaining the variance in 6 minute as well as 10 meter walking test. Six minute walking distance correlated with VC, FVC, FEV1 and PEF (r=0.153 0.178). Maximal time of walking of 10 meters correlated with VC, FVC, FEV1 and PEF (r=−0.162 −0.188) as well. Results of FEV% did not correlate with walking test results. On average, when the association between walking ability and lung function was analyzed without covariates, participants who were classified to the highest tertiles based on flow-volume spirometry results or who were classified as healthy, walked longer distance in 6 minute walking test and faster in 10 meter walking test than participants who were classified to the lowest tertile or as sick. On average, participants who achieved better result in spirometry also had better maximal isometric muscle strength of the knee extensors than participants who had lower lung function results. When age, weight and maximal isometric muscle strength of the knee extensors were taken as covariates in analyzing the association between lung function and distance walked or time of walking, the results were no longer statistically significant. In regression analysis, when explaining walking ability with one age-adjusted spirometry variable at a time, the variance in distance walked (variance explained 2,9 3,9 %) and in time of walking (variance explained 3,3 3,9 %), that spirometry results explained was small. In conclusion, participants who had better lung function walked longer distance in 6 minute and faster 10 meters than participants who had lower lung function test results. The relationship between flowvolume spirometry results and distance walked in 6 minute and speed of walking of 10 meters is however explained mainly through other factors, such as muscle strength." @default.
