The roles played by chronology in early modern European culture deserve equally intense study. In organising the Prodigiorum ac ostentorum chronicon , accordingly, Conrad Lycosthenes took care to connect almost all of the wonders he recounted to precise dates. In the preface to the Nuremberg Chronicle , Hartmann Schedel made clear that he saw the recent collections of 'the scattered inscriptions of the Latins and Greeks, with their antiquities', as his model. Manuscript Syllogai - like the Chronicle - emphasised geographical space, rather than historical time, as the chief organising principle for recording the remains of the ancient world.
