- W8174196 abstract "Transcription of the tryptophan operon of E. coli is controlled at two sites, operator and attenuator, which are located before the first major structural gene of the operon. At the operator transcription initiation is prevented by the binding of a tryptophan-repressor protein complex. At the attenuator, a site in the transcribed leader region of the operon, transcription is either terminated or not, depending on the cellular concentration of some metabolic product of tryptophan. This product, probably Trp-tRNA, and the rho termination protein are participants in regulation at the attenuator. The existence of the two transcription control mechanisms extends the range of expression of the operon and permits the cell to sense the intracellular concentrations of both tryptophan and Trp-tRNA. There is a third transcription control mechanism, which is used to regulate initiation frequency relative to cell growth rate. The molecules involved in this regulatory mechanism are unknown." @default.
