- W81793967 abstract "This paper reviews the concept of saproxylic insect and the main ecological traits of this functional group: diversity, adaptations, niche partitioning, succession and factors determining their species richness. Saproxylic insects are dependent, during part of their life history, on dead wood from dying or dead trees, on wood-decaying fungi or on the presence of other saproxylic organisms. The diversity of saproxylic organisms is very high and, only in Europe, includes thousands of species, many of them insects. About 20-56% of beetles are saproxylic. Wood use has led to morphological, anatomical and metabolic adaptations for the exploitation of a recalcitrant and nutrient-poor resource. Dead wood offers a broad range of potential micro- habitats and the different saproxylic insects segregate spatially according to tree species, kind of tissue and position in the tree. Aside of this spatial segregation, a temporal segregation occurs in relation to the degradative succession during wood decay. Three stages can be recognized in this decay, each of them having a specific saproxylic fauna. Saproxylic insect richness de- pends on quantity and quality of the dead wood available in the forest, and on forest size, fragmentation and management. Eco- logical studies of saproxylic insects are a well established scientific topic in Europe, USA and other countries. However, this has been a neglected topic in the Iberian Peninsula. A species check-list is lacking, as well as detailed studies on which kinds of" @default.
