- W818538505 abstract "Mesophyllic cells were enzymatically isolated from soybean, cot ton, and broad bean leaf tissue. The cells were treated with the sur factants Sterox SK, Renex 36, and WSCP and the herbicides Sindone and Oryzalin. Biochemical studies measuring the photosynthetic rate and the efflux of photosynthetically fixed material were correlated with ultrastructural observations. These studies showed that the cationic sur factant, WSCP, caused disorganization to all cellular membranes while the nonionic surfactants, Renex 36 and Sterox SK produced damage to the chloroplast membranes. The herbicide Sindone interfered with photosynthetic CO^ fixa tion in the chloroplast. Oryzalin increased membrane permeability in cotton and broad bean and caused an inhibition of photosynthetic CO2 fixation. Synergistic effects between Oryzalin and Sterox SK or Renex 36 were noted in soybean and also indicated in broad bean when Oryzalin was combined with Renex 36 or WSCP. Ultrastructural observations show an enhancement of the activity of the herbicide Sindone on the chloroplast membranes when it is combined with Sterox SK, Renex 36, or WSCP. Postulated modes of action of the surfactants and herbicides on single leaf cells includes an interference with cellular membrane in tegrity. Surfactant enhancement of herbicidal activity may be due to chemical interaction between the surfactant and herbicide thereby ix X increasing the interaction of these compounds with structural components of the membrane." @default.
