- W8191817 abstract "This paper presents a simulation study on occupant evacuation in the High-Speed Railway Stations (HSRS) in China. Pathfinder was employed as the simulation platform, and a large-scale HSRS in a medium-sized city in China was selected for simulation model development. The model was carefully calibrated and validated, by comparing the simulation results (e.g. the total evacuation time for specific stairs and doors) with the field data. Door width was examined and found to affect evacuation efficiency in HSRS. Under different occupant densities, the total evacuation time initially decreases monotonously with the increase of door width, and then stays stable when it reaches a certain threshold value. This finding indicates that designers should be very careful on door width in HSRS, ensuring the capacity and avoiding unnecessary waste. A set of different evacuation strategies were compared their evacuation performances. The results show that a balanced door usage could result in more efficient evacuations in HSRS. Thus, to achieve this, occupant flows should be managed considering door capacity. To avoid potential safety issues caused by such strategy (e.g. more occupants may be evacuated from the smaller area according to its evacuation capacity), occupants need to increase their awareness of following evacuation guidance instead of panic escape in emergencies. The model can be used as a qualitative tool, owning to the current limitation of commercial simulation packages in accurately reflecting behavioral factors (e.g. family behaviors and panic escape). Nevertheless, this study still provides valuable information for facility design and emergency evacuation in HSRS in China." @default.
