- W819332383 abstract "18th and 19th Century Literature and Culture Brown, Hilary. Benedikte Naubert (1756-1819) and her Relations to English Culture. Leeds: Maney Publishing, 2005.161 pp. $82.00 paperback There seems little doubt that German fiction writing in the 18th century was influenced by such English writers as Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, Smollett, Sterne, and Goldsmith and that German writers contributed to this cross-cultural influence. However, little attention has been given to the fact that these Anglo-German literary relations also include a female tradition. Hilary Brown's well-researched and cogently argued study fills this lacunae in scholarship by concentrating predominantly on the work of Benedikte Naubert whose fairy tales and novels, as recent studies have shown, contributed to the development of German literature and to a nascent female literary tradition (18). In chapter one, Brown begins by providing an overview of Anglo-German literary relations since 1700, pointing to the increasing number of women entering the literary scene in the later part of the 18th century. Brown's aim is not to establish a female counter-tradition but to elaborate on the links between writers in Britain and Germany, and to point to similarities in themes and styles in their works, keeping in mind that the literary situation differed in the two countries. The most innovative chapter is chapter two in which Brown focuses on Naubert as translator, an area so far unexplored. She places her activities in the context of women and translation of the time and points out that in the age of Weltliteratur many leading writers were translators and developed translation theories (Bodmer, Schleiermacher), but little is known about women's translation. While in the early Enlightenment translation was deemed improper for women, the rising demand later and the fact that it was considered a mediatory rather than an original task made translation particularly suited for women. Through her meticulous research, Brown was able to identify fourteen novels that Naubert translated from English into German between 1786 and 1794, making her the most prolific translator of the time. Naubert was a typical female translator in that she taught herself English, never visited Britain, translated freely, was probably allocated the texts by publishers, and, as Brown was able to prove, most, if not all, novels Naubert translated were written by women. In chapter three, Brown traces the influence of English models on Naubert's family and historical novels and finds in the former echoes of Fielding, Richardson, Smollett, and Goldsmith. …" @default.
