- W82160408 abstract "Results of a 3-yr study on lamellar tearing, a failure that can occur during fabrication of heavy-section steel weldments, show the following: hydrogen is a contributor to tearing, use of lower-strength weld metal can reduce tearing, and preheating before welding minimizes tearing possibility. These findings can be useful in specifying welding techniques for offshore platforms and other thick-section oil field products, such as pressure vessels. Lamellar tearing, although not widely prevalent, may appear during the construction phase. It is generally detected during fabrication and has rarely been held responsible for service failures, but its consequences can be costly, provoking expensive repairs.
