- W82163764 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents a continuous flow-through system for studying the dissolution characteristics of resorbable ceramics. Various in vivo environment simulations, saline, phosphate buffered saline, deionized water. Ringer's solution, Tyrode's solution, sweat, calf serum in saline, bovine blood, and human plasma have been used to investigate the in vitro degradation and/or dissolution characteristics of implants. The goal of developing an implant material is its successful use in humans. Thus, it was considered desirable to investigate the dissolution characteristics of resorbable, aluminum-calcium-phosphorous-oxide (ALCAP) ceramics in a flowing plasma environment at 37oC. Continuous plasma flow system provides a rapid procedure for assessing dissolution characteristics of resorbable implant materials. Dissolution studies conducted on ALCAP ceramics in a flowing human plasma environment show that ALCAP ceramics are resorbable in an acellular environment. The study also shows that by releasing aluminum, calcium and inorganic phosphorous ions, ALCAP ceramics increase the pH of the surrounding media and the latter may assist in the formation of new bone." @default.
