- W82203942 abstract "In The End of History and The Last Man, Francis Fukuyama presented a vision of a world based on his reading of Alexandre Kojève’s interpretation of Hegelian philosophy. From Kojèvian Hegelianism, Fukuyama derives the notion that history is driven by competing ideologies, in the twentieth century mainly liberal democracy, Fascism and communism. At the current historical juncture, liberal democracy has won the battle between ideologies. As a result, the future can consist only of the continued spread of liberal democracy, albeit with the occasional temporary regression to one or other of the discarded and discredited alternatives.1 Fukuyama is careful to state that he distinguishes between the claim that there is no other viable model on offer, from the claim that its consolidation in all countries is imminent or even plausible. But, in the (undefined) longer term, there is a fundamental process at work which dictates a common evolutionary pattern for all human societies; something like a ‘universal history of mankind in the direction of liberal democracy’.2 In his words, ‘what we may be witnessing is not just the end of the Cold War, or the passing of a particular period of post-war history, but the end of history as such: that is, the end point of mankind’s ideological evolution and the universalisation of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government’.3" @default.
