- W822331715 abstract "This article outlines the practical problems of preparing and laying coloured concrete, which is becoming increasingly popular as clients become more aware of the choices now availale to them. There is a trend towards using concrete as a finished surface, rather than hiding it under cladding or surface finishes like paint. There are basically four ways of putting colour into concrete: (1) the dry-shake method, which produces a coloured top surface which does not penetrate the full depth of the concrete; (2) applied finishes, through the use of paint, tinted sealers, and trowelled-on coatings; (3) chemical stains using the water solutions of metallic salts, which soak into the concrete surface and colour it; and (4) full-depth colour, where pigment is added to the concrete in powder or liquid form during mixing, so that all the concrete becomes coloured. For each method, the article outlines the process, and briefly discusses its pitfalls. The choice of the best method depends on several factors, including the project's uses and the final effects required. Issues to be addressed in a typical project include consultation, colour choice, concrete specification, costing, choice of company, pouring date, pigments, pouring, curing, cutting, covering, construction, joint grouting, etching, cleaning, and sealing." @default.
