- W824873918 abstract "This three-part feature begins with a report on the current state of the art in tyre modelling for vehicle dynamics analysis, which was discussed at the recent colloquium on Tyre models for vehicle dynamic analysis held at Delft University of Technology, October 21-22 1991, in the Netherlands. This colloquium was organised jointly by the Technical University, by TNO Delft and by Volvo Car Corporation. The major theme of its papers was the 'magic formula' method for representing tyre forces and moments, first introduced in 1987. There were also references to several other approaches, but it was clear that the magic formula method will maintain its competitive position, because it has sufficient advantage at present over the other methods of vehicle dynamics simulation. This method was first introduced by Bakker E, Nyborg L, and Pacejka HB in: Tyre modelling for use in vehicle dynamics studies published as SAE Paper 870421 in 1987. The method involves fitting analytical functions to experimental side force, longitudinal force, and aligning moment data. Several papers specified tyre test and measurements requirements. It seems almost certain that more fundamentally based models for simulating steady state tyre forces will eventually be developed and used more widely. The second part of the article reports on road tyre developments. While manufacturers seem to develop an improved tread or another size of truck tyre almost monthly, basic tyre development is relatively long-term. One reason for this is that each manufacturer wants to make best use of its investments. The third part of the article discusses tyre selection for off-highway dump-trucks." @default.
