- W825035797 abstract "Skeletal remains from the Western Plains, particularly of Early Ceramic Period date, are relatively uncommon. In anticipation of the future, when sufficient remains have been recovered to permit a synthetic or compara tive approach to biological problems relating to early populations in the Western Plains, the single burial from Michaud Site A is described in detail. Included are observations of metric, morphological, and pathological features of the skeleton. The only burial excavated at Michaud Site A was that of a middle-aged adult female. The skeleton is in fair condition, though somewhat fragmented and eroded. The cranial remains consist of the major portions of the frontal (with fragments of the nasals attached) and both parietals, the alveolar border of the left maxillary, the occipital (basilar region missing), and the greater part of the mandibular body. The few metric data obtain able from the cranium are as follows (in millime ters): Minimum frontal breadth 93 Frontal arc 115 Frontal chord 102 Bidacryonic arc 21 Bidacryonic chord 16 Biasterionic chord 95 Symphyseal height (mandible) 33 The calvarium is undeformed. The position of lambda is noticeably high and there is a single wormian bone interposed midway in the right half of the lambdoid suture. There is a slight degree of osteoporotic pitting of the occipital and parietals along the lambdoid suture and very slight pitting of the orbits. The mastoid processes show medium development and the digastric grooves are quite shallow. The auditory meati are oval in form and the tympanic plates are incom pletely formed and moderately dehiscent. Stylo mastoid foramina are present bilaterally. The supra-orbital foramina are notches rather than distinct foramina. The brow ridge is very slight and divided. The nasal bones are concave in cross-section and their juncture forms an acute angle. The temporal lines are distinct but not pronounced. The mandibular fossae are medium in depth. The mandible has a well-developed mylohyoid ridge and the genial tubercles are quite prominent. The mental foramen (left side) is single. I here is a very shgbt degree of aiveoiar prognathism. The remaining teeth include the upper left lateral incisor through the third molar (Fig. 1c). The teeth are worn to the dentin and the upper left canine has a large, mesial, interden tal carious lesion. The only remaining teeth in the mandible are the left lateral incisor and canine. These show the same degree of wear as the upper teeth. The left second premolar through the third molar in the mandible were lost due to abcessing prior to death and there is considerable resorption of the bone in this area (Fig. ^d). The post-cranial skeleton is represented by fragmentary vertebrae (cervicals 1-4, thoracics 4-12, lumbars 1-5), the medial half of the left clavicle, the axial border of the right scapula, a few rib fragments, a large fragment of the sacrum, badly eroded innominates, both humeri (lacking the proximal ends), the right radius, the right ulna (lacking the distal end), the left ulna, the left femur (minus the epicondyles), the right femur (minus the distal end), both tibiae (eroded around the proximal ends), the right fibula, the left fibula (minus the distal end), and the right calcaneous and talus. The post-cranial metric data are as follows (in millimeters):" @default.
