- W826960459 abstract "Almost a hundred and fifty people have gathered in Marquand Chapel at Yale University on this hot summer morning. This is no simple achievement, as-even under the best of circumstances-entry for casual visitors to this church can be a challenge. Marquand Chapel is, after all, part of a private university and not a place of regular public worship. On this day, the chapel is shrouded in scaffolding, rendering the central stairway unusable and causing visitors to seek entry through a maze of connecting corridors from other buildings. Visitors driving to the chapel by global-positioning systems were directed to the far side from the nearest unlocked entrance. From the street, however, the chapel beckons at the head of a gende sloping hill, surrounded on both sides by an arcade of connecting buildings. The chapel sits at the head of the Sterling Divinity Quadrangle, where it serves as the seminary's place of daily worship. Designed by Delano & Aldrich and constructed in 1932, the quad is of red brick, in a colonial revival style reminiscent of Thomas Jefferson's original buildings at the University of Virginia. The quad was threatened with demolition in the 1990s but instead entered into a process of renovation beginning in 2003.No one worship style or denomination dominates in Marquand, and a broad range of ecumenical options receive welcome here. Ecumenical in mission and planned and led by the students, faculty, administrators, and staff of Yale Divinity School and the Institute of Sacred Music, worship varies from day to day. On Wednesdays during the academic term, the community sings a version of Morning Prayer, and on Fridays they celebrate the Eucharist. Other days may involve the women's center, an association of black seminarians, the LGBTQ Coalition, or another affinity group. These liturgies may engage a particular symbol or theme, but the focus always remains worshipful, consisting primarily of scripture, prayer, prophecy, and praise.Seminarians from the Episcopal Church studying in New Haven are concurrently enrolled in the Berkeley Divinity School, a center for spiritual formation that is related to Yale much as Radcliffe College is to Harvard. Founded in 1854, moved to New Haven in 1928, and affiliated with Yale since 1971, Berkeley retains a distinctive Anglican identity, while partnering with this world-renowned university. Berkley offers daily corporate worship, as well as courses of study in Anglican history and theology. Students receive their degrees from Yale.Marquand Chapel has a piano and two organs: an E. M. Skinner opus 866 in the gallery, installed in 1931 and restored in 1986, and a Taylor & Boody baroque instrument on the chapel floor, installed in 2007. The latter was constructed with a meantone temperament, a system of tuning commonly used in seventeenth-century Europe. The event is the wedding of two of this year's graduates of Yale Divinity School, both currently transitional deacons in the Episcopal Church. On this unseasonably hot June morning, the chapel is thankfully air-conditioned.The congregation gathers in chairs, arranged roughly in a circle in the rectangular space. To the left there is an altar table, and at the right a lectern. From the chancel steps, a small unvested choir sings Ubi caritas of Maurice Durufle (1902-1986) and Sicut cervus of Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina (c.1525-1594) as a prelude. At the bridal procession, the organ bursts forth with an improvisation based on Jupiter from The Planets of Gustav Holst (1874-1934).Led by a female priest, the liturgy begins with a text borrowed from A New Zealand Prayer Book. The couple chose this because it speaks of the power of prayer, a foundation of their relationship. The congregation then sings the hymn Christ is made the sure foundation, to the tune Westminster Abbey. The officiant then prays a collect for marriage, also from the New Zealand liturgy.A layman reads from the Song of Solomon (2:10-13; 8:6-7), following which the choir sings Psalm 67 in a four-part setting by the director of chapel music. …" @default.
